HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US nitrogen products maker Terra Industries said Tuesday that its Terra Environmental Technologies (TET) subsidiary has signed an agreement to supply diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to Ford Motor Company.
Ford will use TET's DEF product for its initial fills on its selective catalytic reduction (SCR)-equipped diesel vehicles when they come off the factory line.
TET will also offer the product to Ford dealerships in multiple packaging options under the Motorcraft brand.
DEF is a urea-based chemical reactant designed specifically for use in SCR systems to reduce nitrous oxide (NOX) emissions:
In an SCR system, a urea-and-water solution (DEF) is injected into the exhaust stream and passed over a catalyst where the urea reacts with the NOX to form harmless nitrogen and water vapour.
TET has the flexibility to ensure quality and supply by sourcing DEF from a number of Terra's six North American nitrogen products manufacturing facilities, Terra chief executive Michael Bennett said.
