Jan US farming costs up 2.2% from Dec as fertilizer prices rise

HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The costs of doing business on a typical US crop-producing farm rose 2.2% in January from a month earlier, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) said on Friday.

The USDA said costs to farmers in January for items such as fertilizer, chemicals and fuels were 1.7% higher in January than the same month a year ago.

Fertilizer costs, specifically, increased 1.9% from December and 4.2% from January 2009.

The prices farmers paid in January for chemicals such as herbicides, insecticides and fungicides also increased, by 0.7% from December and 6.3% from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, fuel costs for gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and diesel in January were 6.4% higher than a month earlier, and 39% more than January 2009.
