S Korea’s Honam Petrochemical to build new 200kt/y PP plant

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--South Korea’s Homan Petrochemical plans to build a new 200,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) plant at Yeosu by 2012, a company source said on Thursday.

The move is in line with the expansion of its upstream naphtha-based cracker by 250,000 tonnes/year to 1m tonnes/year, the source said.

The company also plans to build a new high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant at Yeosu with a capacity of more than 200,000 tonnes/year capacity, he added.

Honam Petrochemical is a major PP and HDPE exporter to China, the world's largest polyolefins importer.

Different grades of PP and HDPE are used in a wide range of applications, including automotives and consumer packaging.
