SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Japan’s Mitsubishi Chemical plans to shut its 150,000 tonne/year olefin conversion unit (OCU) in Kashima for a turnaround in May-June, a company official said on Thursday.

The planned shutdown is in line with the maintenance at its 375,000 tonne/year No 1 cracker, which will be taken off line from 8 May to 26 June.

The metathesis unit, which converts ethylene and butene into propylene, supplies feedstock to Japan Polypropylene’s 300,000 tonne/year polypropylene plant at the same site.

Mitsubishi Chemical was in a short position for propylene this year but had secured supplies from the domestic market and imports on a term basis, market sources said.
