Union calls for halt to strikes at Total’s refineries in France

LONDON (ICIS news)--French union CGT has called for strikes at Total’s refinery sites in France to end after “significant advances” were achieved during nine hours of talks at Total’s headquarters late on Tuesday, the union said on its website on Wednesday morning.

A statement from the union said: “The final word will be with the strikers.”

Reports suggested that union meetings would be held at each refinery between 12:00-14:00 hours local time on Wednesday, when workers would decide whether to end the strikes.

As well as causing alarm in France over the availability of petrol, the strikes, which began at Dunkirk on 17 February, have led to the outage of 36% of France’s total propylene capacity, prompting concern over the availability of downstream petrochemicals like polypropylene.

Total declared force majeure on propylene on 22 February.
