HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Sasol has placed its butyl acrylate (butyl-A) and ethyl acrylate (ethyl-A) production at Sasolburg in South Africa on 70% sales control after an unplanned outage at the site’s feedstock acrylic acid plant, a source at the energy and petrochemicals company said on Wednesday.
The measures were implemented after the acrylic acid plant had to be shut down unexpectedly for a polymer wash on 1 March, the source said. That maintenance process was expected to take about 18 days, but the sales control will remain in effect for three months, the source confirmed.
Sasol did not immediately respond to inquiries for further comment.

In addition, BASF had already placed its acrylates and feedstock oxo-alcohols on 100% sales control, citing inordinate demand from outside its contractual customer base.
Sasol’s butyl-A capacity at Sasolburg is 80,000 tonnes/year, while ethyl-A capacity is 35,000 tonnes/year.
Butyl-A is made primarily from n-butanol (NBA) and acrylic acid. Ethyl-A is made from ethylene and acrylic acid.
February butyl-A contract prices were 80-86 cents/lb ($1,764-1,896/tonne, €1,305-1,403/tonne), and ethyl-A contracts were 81-87 cents/lb, according to data from global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
US price-hike initiatives for March acrylates contracts are 13-20 cents/lb.
