Monsanto completes $200m US glyphosate plant expansion

TORONTO (ICIS news)--Monsanto has completed a $200m (€148m) expansion at its glyphosate herbicide plant at Luling near New Orleans, Louisiana, the US agrochemicals major said on Friday.

The expansion would boost production capacity of Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide by 20%, said Kerry Preete, president of Monsanto’s crop protection division.

The company did not disclose capacity data in terms of tonnes or pounds per year.

Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal welcomed Monsanto’s investment as part of rebuilding the US Gulf coast following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Monsanto’s Luling expansion, first announced in 2008, took nearly two years to complete. It absorbed 1.2m man hours of construction labour, the company said.
