Mab Ta Phut Olefins in process of starting up cracker

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Mab Ta Phut Olefins Company is in the process of starting up its 900,000 tonne/year naphtha cracker this week, a source close to the company said on Monday.

“On-spec production for ethylene and propylene should be achieved by this week,” he said.

The company is a joint venture between Thailand’s largest conglomerate Siam Cement Group (SCG) and US major The Dow Chemical Company.

New crackers coming on stream in the region and ample supplies from the Middle East had driven ethylene prices below $1,200/tonne (€876/tonne) CFR (cost and freight) southeast Asia, market sources said.

Spot prices were assessed down $100-120/tonne at $1,120-1,160/tonne CFR SE Asia last week, according to ICIS pricing.
