HOUSTON (ICIS news)--US exports of butyl acetate (butac) totalled 5,597 tonnes in January, more than tripling the 1,761 tonnes shipped abroad during the first month of 2009, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) said on Thursday.
January exports rose 23% over the 4,568 tonnes exported in December 2009, according to the ITC data.
Sources said the increase reflects some demand improvement in this niche market. However, the improvement also reflects an especially weak month in January 2009.
Butac is a major ingredient in automotive paint.
Mexico, China and South Africa led all export destinations, accounting for a collective 3,403 tonnes, or almost 61% of total shipments, according to the data.
US Gulf coast export free on board (FOB) prices were 65-74 cents/lb ($1,433-1,631/tonne, €1,046-1,191/tonne) over the past month, according to global chemical market intelligence service ICIS pricing.
Major US butac producers include Dow Chemical, Eastman Chemical and Oxea Group.
