Japan's Mitsui Chem to restart Chiba phenol-acetone unit H2 March

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Mitsui Chemicals plans to resume production at its phenol-acetone plant in Chiba in the next couple of days, following an unplanned shutdown early this month, a company source said on Monday.

The plant, which can produce 190,000 tonnes/year of phenol and 114,000 tonnes/year of acetone, was taken off line on 1 March as feedstock propylene supply was affected due to an outage at its upstream cracker facility, the source said.

“We will procure propylene from the market and we plan to resume operation from mid-March,” the source said.

The plant was also scheduled for a month-long maintenance shutdown in mid October, the source added.

Mitsui Chemicals also has a phenol-acetone plant in Chiba, in joint venture with Idemitsu Kosan, that has a nameplate capacity of 230,000 tonnes/year of phenol and 80,000 tonnes/year of acetone.

The plant was shut on 10 March for a scheduled turnaround, and would remain off line until 13 May, the source said.
