SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Mab Ta Phut Olefins Company is currently running its 900,000 tonne/year naphtha cracker in Thailand at around 60% of capacity after achieving on-spec production last week, said a source close to the company on Friday.

The company – a joint venture between Thailand’s largest conglomerate Siam Cement Group (SCG) and US major Dow Chemical – has yet to start up its metathesis unit, which can produce around 300,000 tonnes/year of propylene, the source added.

“We want to make sure cracker operations have stabilised before starting up the metathesis unit next week,” he said.

Mab Ta Phut Olefins is expected to export propylene and some discussions were mentioned at around $1,150/tonne (€862.5/tonne) FOB (free on board), the source added.

Some market sources had earlier estimated that the company would be able to export more than 100,000 tonnes of propylene on an annual basis.
