NEW YORK (ICIS news)--Lonza is building a new manufacturing facility in China to expand production of two L-carnitine products, Carnipure and Carniking, the Swiss life science manufacturer said on Tuesday.

L-carnitine is a naturally occurring amino acid used in nutritional supplements for both humans (Carnipure) and animals (Carniking).

Carnipure and Carniking have experienced a surge in demand in the last few years due to strong scientific evidence, favorable regulatory status and appeal to end consumers,” said Lukas Utiger, chief operating officer of Lonza life science ingredients, one of three Lonza business units.

The new capacity will be installed at Lonza’s facilities in Nansha, in China’s southern province of Guangdong, the company said. It will be added in phases, with the first phase to come on line by the end of this year.

The new capacity will employ a new proprietary production process that Lonza has submitted for patent protection, the company said.

Lonza did not reveal specific capacity figures for the new facility.
