TORONTO (ICIS news)--Intertek has bought the Ciba Expert Services environmental, safety and testing business from BASF, Intertek said on Tuesday.

The acquisition would add over 200 specialists in Canada, Switzerland, Brazil, USA, China, India, Italy, Japan and the UK to Intertek’s global staff, the services and inspection company said.

It included Ciba’s Cantox Health Sciences and Ashuren Health Sciences, it added.

Intertek did not disclose the price, but said the gross assets acquired were worth some £4m ($6.1m; €4.5m) and were expected to generate revenues of around £20m in the first year.

“Ciba Expert Services' strength in product-related testing and regulatory consulting makes this a strategic acquisition for Intertek as it extends our services and expertise to clients in a number of our business lines," said Intertek chief executive Wolfhart Hauser.

Ciba Expert Services helps clients to obtain health, safety and environmental approvals for their products and to address hazardous substances and chemicals notifications and regulations worldwide, including the EU’s REACH regulation, Intertek said.

It also provides safety testing services, primarily to the pharmaceutical and chemicals sectors, to ensure products meet safety requirements.

BASF closed the acquistion of Ciba in April last year. A BASF executive said recently the company was still intensely dealing” with the Ciba acquisition and had put limitations on any other merger and acquisition activity.
