US Air Products to build hydrogen plant in Malaysia

LONDON (ICIS news)--Air Products is to build a new hydrogen production facility in West Port, Selangor, Malaysia to support increasing product demand in the region, the US industrial gases major said on Tuesday.

The group said the steam methane reformer (SMR), with a projected hydrogen production capacity of more than 1.5m standard cubic feet per day, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2011.

“The new facility will increase our production capacity in West Port and strengthen Air Products’ leading hydrogen position in Malaysia,” said Douglas Hayes, vice president and general manager of Asia Tonnage at Air Products.

Air Products said the new facility would be its second hydrogen plant in West Port and aid it in supplying high purity hydrogen and steam to its local customer base.

The hydrogen produced by the SMR would be used by a variety of industries, including oleochemical manufacturers which produce fatty alcohols, fatty acid and methyl esters, the company added.
