SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Germany’s BASF is planning to build a new polyurethane (PU) system house in Chongqing, China, to provide sales and technical services to customers, the company said on Thursday.

The new system house would meet the demand of the growing markets in important industries such as construction, appliances, transportation, and footwear in western China, BASF said in a statement.

BASF expected the market for PU in western China to grow significantly, driven mostly by the constructon industry, said Melanie Maas-Brunner, group vice president for PU in the Asia-Pacific region.

The  system house, which was expected to start its first services by 2012, would be integrated with a new world-scale 400,000 tonne/year methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) plant, it said.

BASF signed a memorandum of cooperation in June 2007 with Chongqing Chemical and Pharmaceutical Holding Co (CCPHC) and the relevant local authorities to set up the MDI plant at the Changshou Chemical Industry Park in Chongqing, a provincial-level municipality in Sichuan province.

“The new PU system house will be fully backward integrated into the planned MDI plant – a significant advantage our customers can benefit from,” said Jacques Delmoitiez, president of BASF Polyurethanes.

MDI is a raw material for making polyurethane foams used in various applications, including construction, automobiles, home appliances and shoe soles.
