HOUSTON (ICIS news)--The US Coast Guard on Monday was investigating the cause of a 24 April benzene barge explosion at LBC Tank Terminals on the Mississippi River near Sunshine, Louisiana.

Two crew members were injured in the explosion that occurred Saturday shortly before 15:30 hours Houston time (21:30 GMT) while a barge was loading benzene at a tank terminal near Sunshine, Louisiana, a Coast Guard spokesman said.

The Coast Guard said the crew members were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries before the Coast Guard arrived on the scene.

The barge, owned by Kirby, was nearly empty at the time of the explosion, the Coast Guard said.

Kirby did not immediately respond to requests seeking comment, but the Coast Guard said the barge was cleared for repair.

LBC Tank Terminals was also not immediately available to comment.

Subsequent monitoring of air and water found no pollution related to the incident, and the river remained open, the Coast Guard said.
