HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazil’s first-quarter chemical output rose by 15.6% year on year, industry association Abiquim said on Friday, attributing the increase to a recovery in the local economy but also to a weak comparison base a year earlier.

The industry in the first quarter operated at an average of 81%, up from 71% in the same three months of 2009, the associations said.

Abiquim said a strong performance by the sector in March also helped boost quarterly results.

Brazil’s monthly chemical production in March rose by 4.9%, after dropping by a combined 6.2% in the previous two months.

The association said first-quarter chemical sales increased by 16.4% year on year, also helped by strong results in March.

Brazil’s chemical sales in March climbed by 11.3% from February, following a combined drop of 8.1% in January-February, the association said.
