SHANGHAI (ICIS news)--China-based Shenhua Baotou Coal Chemical plans to achieve on-spec polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene(PP) products from its coal-to-olefins (CTO) complex by 30 September, a company source said on Friday.

“Some units have already started the solo trial runs. It is a complicated technology process, and the final on-spec PP and PE will be out by the end of September based on our schedule,” the source said.

The project in Baotou, northern Inner Mongolia province mainly includes a 1.8m tonne/year coal-based methanol unit, a 600,000 tonne/year methanol to olefins (MTO) facility, a 300,000 tonne/year PE unit and a 300,000 tonne/year PP unit.

Methanol would be used as feedstock for the PE and PP productions, according to an earlier report.

Shenhua Baotou Coal Chemical is a 76:24 joint venture between China’s largest coal producer Shenhua Group and Shanghai-based state-owned company Shanghai Huayi Group.

Shenhua has another MTO project with Dow in Yulin, northwestern Shaanxi province.
