MOSCOW (ICIS news)--The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) has laid out its plans for the expansion of its petrochemical subsidiary Azerikimya, the company said on Thursday.

SOCAR aims to increase the ethylene (C2) and propylene (C3) capacities of Azerikimya by two to three times, it said.

SOCAR also pledged to upgrade Azerikimya’s existing capacities at Sumgait and to build a new refinery and a gas processing plant at Sangachal, near the capital Baku.

The 15m tonne/year refinery and the 40bn cubic metre/year gas processing plant were expected to come on stream by 2019, SOCAR said, without disclosing additional details.

Last month, SOCAR took over the Azerbaijani state-run petrochemical company Azerikimya.

In 2009, Azerikimya produced about 70,000 tonnes of C2 and some 35,000 tonnes of C3.
