LONDON (ICIS news)--Qatar Melamine Co has started to produce melamine at its 60,000 tonne/year plant in the city of Mesaieed, Qatar, a company source confirmed on Thursday.

Yousef al-Kuwari, a marketing manager at Qatar Fertiliser Co (QAFCO), said in a statement: “With great pleasure we announce that the first melamine ever produced in QAFCO and Qatar was observed in silo A in the melamine warehouse…on 8 May 2010.”

Qatar Melamine Co  is a 60:40 joint venture between QAFCO and Qatar Intermediate Industries Holding Co.

The company intends to market the melamine to Europe, Asia and eventually the US, according to the statement.

Qatar Melamine plans to have long-term contracts and will also be supplying the spot market, the statement added.

Reacting to news of the first production of melamine from the plant, a trader said: “We will see a lot of changes in supply.”

The trader added that it was concerned about potential competition from China.

China will be aggressive. We will see a fight for the market.”
