HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Brazil consumed 789,461 dry metric tonnes (dmt) of caustic soda in the first four months of 2010, up by 7.4% from 735,104 dmt in the same period last year, the country’s association of chloralkali industries reported on Monday.

Brazil’s domestic production between January and April of 2010 was 465,788 dmt, higher by 12% from 416,447 dmt during the same period of 2009, the national association of chloralkali industries Abiclor reported.

Caustic soda imports of 323,673 dmt made up the balance of the consumption total for the first four months of 2010. Imports were higher this year by 1.6% from 318,657 dmt in 2009.

Demand for caustic soda in Brazil was robust, driven by a healthy economy, dynamic private and public construction, and government support, sources said.

Caustic soda producers in Brazil include Braskem, Carbocloro and Dow Chemical.
