GUANGZHOU (ICIS news)--PetroChina subsidiary Urumqi Petrochemical is expected to start up a 1m tonne/year paraxylene (PX) unit in Urumqi, China’s northwestern Xinjiang region, by late September, a company source said on Tuesday.

“Construction of the yuan (CNY) 3.9bn ($571m) unit will be wrapped up in end June, with equipment testing and other preparation work to be conducted in the following three months before [its] commissioning,” the source said.

Feedstock would be supplied from the firm's 6m tonne/year refinery at the same site, the source added.

“If the refinery can get enough crude to run at full load, we definitely don’t need to outsource feedstock for the PX unit. But we have short supply of crude now,” the source said and added that the PX unit may not operate at full capacity in the initial stage.
