TORONTO (ICIS news)--Umicore plans to build a technology development centre for automotive catalysts in Suzhou in China's eastern Jiangsu province, the Belgian catalysts and materials group said on Tuesday.

Under a memorandum of understanding with Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP) authorities, the new facility would be operational by mid 2012, it said.

Umicore already has an automotive catalyst production plant in Suzhou which it opened in 2005 and then expanded in 2008.

“The Chinese car market is growing rapidly and this, coupled with the increasing stringent emission legislation, justified the investment in a dedicated applied technology centre,” said Bill Staron, Umicore’s executive vice president for automotive catalysts.

Umicore did not disclose investment details.

The company has similar technology centres in Japan, South Korea, Europe and the Americas.
