Brazil’s Jan-April chemical output up 15.83% - Abiquim

SAO PAULO (ICIS news)--Brazil’s production of industrial chemicals increased 15.83% in the first four months of 2010 from the same period last year amid stronger demand period, chemical industry association Abiquim said on Thursday.

Domestic sales increased 14.66% year-over-year on better market conditions and stronger demand as well, Abiquim said.

The recovery of domestic chemical demand from the beginning of 2009 led to the increase, Abiquim said. The sector earlier operated at record low rates amid the international credit crisis.

The association said Brazil’s chemicals industry ran at 82% of installed production capacity during the first four months of 2010, compared with only 74% of capacity during the same period last year.

Domestic prices of chemicals rose by 6.54% in the first four months of 2010 compared with the same period last year.

“Despite last year’s impacts from the global crisis, projections for the chemical segment for this year’s end remain positive…,”Abiquim added.

The association said its figures were preliminary.
