SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Thailand’s PTT Aromatics and Refining (PTTAR) shut its 560,000 tonne/year paraxylene (PX) unit in Mab Ta Phut on Tuesday for a 30-day scheduled maintenance, a company source said.

The shutdown is expected to ease the supply glut in Asia for the short-term, the source said.

Since early this year, spot PX prices had fallen nearly 19% due to oversupply, coupled with a chronic lack of buying interest from end-users who had already secured sufficient volumes through long-term contracts, market sources said.

The company’s other PX facility at the same site, with a nameplate capacity of up to 616,000 tonnes/year of PX, will operate at around 90-95% in June, the company source said.
