The first phase included the revamp of the refinery’s existing crude distillation unit, a new vacuum distillation unit, a new catalytic reformer unit, as well as power generation and associated facilities, the company said.
"This project is of significant strategic importance for Cameroon, allowing the Limbé refinery to process local crude and condensate while increasing processing capacity and improving overall refinery utilisation," said Umberto della Sala, president and chief operating officer of Switzerland-based Foster Wheeler AG.
After overall completion, SONARA would be able to market more value-added products such as kerosene and diesel, he added.
In related news, Chinese contractor China State Construction Engineering said last month it would build three refineries and a petrochemicals complex in neighbouring Nigeria, under a $23.8bn (€19.3bn) deal with that country's Nigerian National Petroleum Corp.
