Brazil Braskem mulls second ethanol-based PE plant

SAO PAULO (ICIS news)--Brazilian petrochemical major Braskem plans to build a second polyethylene (PE) plant that would produce the resin from ethanol feedstock derived from sugarcane, the company said on Tuesday.

Braskem was reviewing sites for the new plant. In addition, it was ensuring that it would have enough feedstock ethanol to produce the PE.

In other news, Braskem plans to start production at its first ethanol-based PE plant in September, a month early, said Marco Antonio Quirino, the company's PE director.

The plant at Triunfo, Rio Grande do Sul, will have a capacity of 200,000 tonnes/year. Initially, Braskem planned to start operations in October.
