LONDON (ICIS news)--Equipolymers has unexpectedly shut down its Italian polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plant after a power failure caused a blockage in the facility, a company source said on Thursday.

The 170,000 tonne/year plant in Ottana, Sardinia, went down on 9 June and was due to restart on 10 June, according to the source.

“All the polymers will have hardened, so we need to flush the plant out,” it added.

The outage would result in delayed deliveries into Italy.

PET in Europe was quite tight because of several outages that were either scheduled or already underway in June, buyers and sellers said.

Indorama recently announced that, along with its joint venture partner Ottana Energia,  it was acquiring Equipolymers’ PET and 190,000 tonne/year PTA production facilities at Ottana, Italy.

“We are waiting to take ownership,” according to an Indorama company source.

Equipolymers is a 50-50 joint venture between Dow Chemical and the Petrochemical Industries Co (PIC) of Kuwait.
