LONDON (ICIS news)--A sailor died following an explosion on board a chemical tanker off the Spanish coast, the vessel’s owner said on Friday.

The incident happened on the Kemal Ka on Thursday, as it awaited orders off the coast near Chipiona. The sailor died later while being transported to hospital by helicopter.

Two other seamen were seriously injured and remained in a critical condition in hospital.

A spokeswoman for the ship’s Turkish owner, Trans Ka Tankers Management, said that one of the sailors had fallen into an empty tank and the two others were attempting to rescue him when the explosion happened.

The company has not disclosed what cargo had been in the tank previously.

Spanish maritime rescue officials said there had been no fire and that the vessel had not been damaged. The ship was later given permission to moor in the port of Cadiz.
