Brazil’s May chemical imports rise 44% year over year

SAO PAULO (ICIS news)--Brazil imported $2.6bn (€2.1bn) worth of chemical products in May, up 44% year over year and 11.8% over April, Brazil’s chemical industry association Abiquim said on Tuesday.

Exports totalled $1.08bn in May, up 39.2% year over year and 4.6% over April, Abiquim said.

In January through May, imports reached $12.3bn, up 40.3% year over year, while exports totalled $5.1bn, up 39.1%, Abiquim said.    

Chemical products for fertilizers were the top imported product, with over $1.5bn worth of purchases from January through May, up 99.1% year over year, Abiquim said. 

The top product exported by Brazil were thermoplastic resins, with $717.4m worth of resins sold from January through May, up 13% year over year, according to the association.
