HOUSTON (ICIS news)--Global shipments of large-area thin film transistor liquid display crystal (TFT LCD) panels rose 9% in May over April and 36% over the same month last year, market research firm DisplaySearch said on Friday.
TFT LCD panels are a key-end use product for many petrochemicals including methyl methacrylate (MMA).
Global shipments were 58.8m units in May.
Revenues were $7.5bn (€6.0bn), up 7% month on month. These results surpassed the previous monthly high record level in March 2010, the firm said.
“The May results indicate that although the industry is going through a panel price and inventory correction period this quarter, panel shipment momentum is not slowing down,” DisplaySearch vice president David Hsieh said.
Revenues increased 60% from the previous year, the firm said.
Flat panel units boosted demand for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is used to manufacture the acrylic light guide panels for these units.
The increase in demand has led to a tight supply of PMMA and its raw material methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the global markets.
“Tightness in the LCD module and backlight components supply chain and confidence about strong demand in the next quarter have encouraged panel makers to maintain their present high capacity utilisation rates and the downstream buyers to accumulate more preparatory inventories,” Hsieh said.
TFT LCDs are used in television sets, computer monitors, mobile phones, handheld video game systems, personal digital assistants, navigation systems, projectors and more.
All applications in May showed positive growth from the previous month, with notebook and slate/mini-note panels showing the strongest growth at 16% month on month.
