TORONTO (ICIS news)--Shaw has won a contract from RTI International to help develop RTI’s new technology for synthesis gas (syngas) cleaning at elevated temperatures, the US petrochemicals engineering firm said on Tuesday.
The new technology, for which RTI and Eastman Chemical had conducted successful pilot tests at Eastman’s chemical complex in Kingsport, Tennessee, would eliminate the need for syngas cooling and expensive heat recovery systems - thus reducing capital and operating costs, Shaw said.
The technology could potentially reduce the cost of producing hydrogen, methanol, ammonia, as well as fuels, through gasification of coal or other low-value carbon-based feedstocks, Shaw said.
Shaw’s contract included a study for a 50-megawatt (MW) commercial demonstration unit to be built at a 250-MW integrated gasification combined cycle power plant in ?xml:namespace>
The project was funded through RTI’s agreement with the US Department of Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory to design and build a demonstration unit, Shaw added.
In related news, BASF and RTI said last month they planned to develop cost-effective non-aqueous solvent systems to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at coal-fired power plants and industrial facilities.
