TORONTO (ICIS news)--Henkel and BASF Coatings have agreed to set up a research joint venture to develop coatings corrosion products and processes for the automotive industry, they said on Friday.

The equal joint venture, to be headquartered in Dusseldorf, was expected to be launched early next year, they said but did not disclose financial details.

The venture would combine the companies’ complementary competences in metal pre-treatment and dip coating to develop solutions that would perform better than the standard corrosion protection processes used in the auto industry, they said.

One objective of the venture was to help automotive customers reduce the number of process stages for metal pre-treatment and corrosion protection, which would offer benefits in the first phase of automotive painting, said Paul Kirsch, corporate senior vice president for transport and metal at Henkel.

The companies would jointly market any successful products or processes developed by their venture, they said.
