SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Taiwan-based Chimei-Asahi Chemical Co plans to bring forward the shutdown of its 75,000 tonne/year No 2 polycarbonate (PC) plant in Jente, Tainan County, due to prevailing weak market conditions, a company source said on Wednesday.
The unit would be shut on 1 August and would remain off line until the end of September, said the source, who added that it had originally been scheduled for a turnaround in mid-August.
The company also has a 65,000 tonne/year No 1 unit at the same site and both units were currently running at full capacity, the source said.
Chimei-Asahi Chemical is a 90:10 joint venture between Taiwan’s Chi Mei Corp and Japan’s Asahi Kasei Corp.
Polycarbonate resins are tough thermoplastics with major markets in the electrical, electronic and automotive sectors.
