US PVC exports remain buoyant in June

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exports in June rose 21.7% to 199,299 tonnes from the same month last year, according to the Wednesday release of data from the International Trade Commission (ITC).

Canada continued to hold the top spot for US PVC exports, with 45,541 tonnes of resin imported in June 2010 compared with 38,040 tonnes in the same month last year.

But June year-on-year gains in US exports to Russia and Argentina put them among the top ten destinations of US material, according to the ITC.

US exports to Russia were 18,167 tonnes in June 2010, but only 299 tonnes in 2009, while Argentina brought in 5,686 tonnes this year but only 105 tonnes last year, according to the ITC.

US PVC exports to China were 18,364 tonnes in June 2010, down from 22,593 in June of last year as the Chinese market continues to move in favour of local carbide-based production rather than ethylene-based imports.

US PVC export spot prices were last assessed by ICIS at $800-870/tonne (€608-661/tonne).

The PVC export market continues to offer demand support for US producers amid ongoing flat economics in the key housing segment. 

US PVC producers include Formosa Plastics, Shintech and Georgia Gulf, among others.
