Celanese to increase polyphenylene sulphide at US plant

TORONTO (ICIS)--Celanese affiliate Fortron will increase capacity at its 15,000 tonne/year polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) polymer plant at Wilmington, North Carolina, and hire additional staff there to meet increased global demand, the US chemicals major said on Thursday.

Fortron is a joint venture between Celanese’s Ticona engineering polymers business and Japan’s Kureha.

“Fortron is ramping up production and adding new staff at our Wilmington plant to meet the anticipated demand of our global customers by the end of the third quarter,” said Ticona general manager Roeland Polet.

Celanese did not disclose investment details or by how much capacity would be expanded.

Fortron's PPS was used in applications such as auto pumps, valves, air ducts, power trains, electronic connectors, plugs and switches, among others, Celanese said.
