BP to pay $51m to resolve 270 citations at Texas City refinery

HOUSTON (ICIS)--BP will pay a US regulator $50.6m (€39.5m) to settle 270 citations connected to the 2005 explosion at its refinery in Texas City, the company said on Thursday.

In addition to the $50.6m payment, BP would fund a $500m programme from 2010-2016 to improve safety at the refinery, the company said.

This comes on top of the $1bn that BP spent in 2005-2009 to make the refinery safer, the company said.

BP had contested the citations, saying that much work had been done to improve safety at the refinery.

The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had issued a total of 709 citations in October 2009, alleging that BP failed to satisfy the terms of an agreement made in 2005, BP said.

The explosion at the Texas City refinery killed 15 workers and injured 170.

With the 270 citations resolved, BP said it hoped to resolve the remaining ones.
