India’s Reliance restarts Nagothane cracker complex

SINGAPORE (ICIS news)--Reliance Industries, India’s biggest petrochemical producer, has restarted its cracker complex at Nagothane, in the Maharashtra state, after a week-long outage, a source close to the company said on Monday.

“The complex was restarted on the night of 15 August, and operating rates at the different units are slowly being ramped up,” the source said.

The gas cracker was shut down due to a technical issue but the derivative units were also forced to go offline due to a shortage of olefins feedstock, the source added.

The restart of the plant would slightly ease supply in the Indian polymer market, which has been facing severe shortages, especially in polypropylene (PP), low density polyethylene (LDPE) and linear low density PE (LLDPE), traders said.

“Customer inventories for these grades are very low and imports are being delayed due to the disruption at Mumbai ports, so everyone is trying to get hold of local cargoes,” a trader said.

Normal operations at the ports were expected to resume only later this week.

Reliance’s Nagothane facility includes a 400,000 tonne/year cracker, a 120,000 tonne/year PP plant, a 240,000 tonne/year high density PE (HDPE)/LLDPE swing unit and an 110,000 tonne/year LDPE unit.

Other PE and PP producers in India include Haldia Petrochemicals Ltd and Gail India.
