Canada chemical sales rise 1.2% in June from May

TORONTO (ICIS news)--Canadian chemical sales rose 1.2% to Canadian dollar (C$) 3.693bn ($3.551bn) in June from May, a government statistics agency said on Tuesday

The increase came after an 0.5% decline in May from April, Ottawa-based Statistics Canada said.

Year over year, Canadian chemical sales rose 8.0% from June 2009.

Canadian sales of plastics and rubber products were C$1.743bn in June, down 1.4% sequentially from May and up 14.1% year over year from June 2009.

Overall, Canadian manufacturing sales edged up 0.1% to C$44.8bn in June from May. Sales advanced in 11 of the past 13 months since a low reached in May 2009, the agency said.

Year over year, manufacturing sales were up 12.7% from June 2009.

New manufacturing orders were C$45.5bn in June, down 0.3% from May but up 11.0% year over year from June 2009.

Inventory levels rose 0.7% to C$58.8bn in June from May, the first increase since February.

The sequential increase reflected a rise in the value of inventories held in the petroleum and coal products (+4.1%), chemical manufacturing (+2.4%) and wood products (+3.2%) industries, the agency said.

The increase in the value of petroleum and coal products inventories was fuelled by higher volumes held at several refineries, it added.

The overall inventory-to-sales ratio was 1.31 in June, compared with 1.30 in May and 1.58 in June 2009.

In relates news, Canadian chemical railcar shipments for the year-to-date period to 7 August were up 25.0% to 443,009, from 354,334 in the same period in 2009, according to the Association of American Railroads, a trade group.
