Vancouver July sulphur exports up 14% from previous month

LONDON (ICIS)--Shipments of sulphur from the Canadian port of Vancouver climbed 14% to 417,000 tonnes in July on the back of stronger demand from China, customs data showed late on Tuesday.

Total Canadian sulphur shipments in July amounted to 417,048 tonnes, up 14% from June’s total of 364,419 tonnes. The increase reflected improving market sentiment with global demand picking up since the beginning of the third quarter.

The biggest increase of exports was to China, which received 245,653 tonnes of Canadian sulphur, up 114,023 tonnes or 87%, from the previous month’s 131,630 tonnes.

China is currently the biggest sulphur import country, and its demand had improved in July amid a strong diammonium phosphate (DAP) market.

Israel was the second largest importer, receiving a total of 58,215 tonnes in July.

A cargo of 48,270 tonnes was shipped from Vancouver to Galveston in July, suggesting the US market was short of sulphur. The last time Canada shipped sulphur cargoes to the US was in 2008.

Total Vancouver shipments January-July 2010 amounted to 2.13m tonnes, still down from 2.53m tonnes in the same period last year.

Sulphur is a raw material for phosphate fertilizers.
