TORONTO (ICIS)--Chemical shipments on US railroads rose 4.7% last week from the same period in 2009, a rail industry group said on Thursday, marking their 32nd increase so far this year.

Chemical railcar loadings for the week ended 21 August were 28,821, up by 1,302 carloads from 27,519 in the same week last year, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).

The increase compared with a 6.8% increase in the previous week ended 14 August.

The weekly chemical railcar loadings data are an important real-time measure of chemical industry activity and demand. Railcar loadings represent about 20% of US chemical volumes by tonnage, with trucks, barges and pipelines carrying the rest.

The increase in last week's chemical shipments compared with a 6.2% year-over-year increase in overall weekly railcar shipments for the 19 high-volume freight commodity groups tracked by the AAR.

However, compared with their pre-recession level, o
verall carloads were still down 11.0% from the 2008 comparison week, the association noted.

Year-to-date to 21 August, US chemical railcar loadings were up 11.0% to 951,156 from 857,275 in the year-earlier period.
