HOUSTON (ICIS)--BP lifted the massive blowout preventer from the top of the blown-out well in the Gulf of Mexico as part of its plan to permanently seal the well, a ?xml:namespace>
National Incident Commander Admiral Thad Allen said the blowout preventer would be lifted to the surface in the next 24-36 hours. The blowout preventer and a latching device weigh 1m lbs (454 tonnes), he said.
BP planned to replace the blowout preventer with a new one. The damaged one, which failed to stop the 20 April explosion that killed 11 workers, would be examined, according to news accounts.
