US PP exports fall 16% month over month - ITC

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US polypropylene (PP) exports fell to 97,233 tonnes in July, down by 18,663 tonnes, or 16%, from the previous month, according to US International Trade Commission (ITC) data released on Thursday.

Two-thirds of July 2010 exports (64,732 tonnes) were to Canada and Mexico.

Year over year, PP exports dropped 25% from 129,323 tonnes in July 2009.

Year-to-date export volumes of 714,529 tonnes were lagging 2009 by 27% (267,111 tonnes), pushed down by higher propylene costs in the US and increasing production in Asia and the Middle East, sources said.

Imports of PP resin to the US have increased by 64% year over- ear, although the year-to-date volume of 44,446 tonnes was still small compared with exports.

Through the first seven months of 2010, two of the fastest-growing sellers of exports to the US were Korea (6,723 tonnes) and Japan (3,147 tonnes).

Major US PP producers include INEOS, LyondellBasell, Dow Chemical, Phillips Sumika, Sunoco, Pinnacle, Formosa, Total, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Flint Hills Resources.
