India’s MFCL plans feedstock change at Mangalore ferts facility

MUMBAI (ICIS)--India’s Mangalore Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd (MCFL) plans to change the feedstock at its fertilizer complex at Mangalore, south India from naphtha and furnace oil to gas, a government source said on Tuesday.

In addition to the change in feedstock, MCFL also plans to expand the urea and ammonia capacities at the facility once it receives the required approvals, the source at the Ministry of Environment and Forests said, but did not provide further details.

The project would require an investment of nearly Indian rupees (Rs) 4bn ($86.56m), the source said adding that changing the feedstock to gas would be cheaper and cost effective for the company.

The company had submitted its proposal to the ministry and was awaiting environmental clearance, the source said.

MFCL has the capacity to produce 217,800 tonnes/year of ammonia, 379,500 tonnes/year of urea and 255,500 tonnes of phosphatic fertilizers at the facility, according to the company website.

Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd is a part of the UB Group, a large and diversified business house.
