Bayer CropScience invests €12m to expand vegetable seed business

LONDON (ICIS)--Bayer CropScience’s vegetable seed business Nunhems will invest €12m ($15.4m) to expand its research centre in Leudal, the Netherlands, the German specialty chemicals maker said on Tuesday.

The extension of the research building from 2,200 square meters to a total size of 6,400 square meters was scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2011.

Bayer added that the facilities would also be equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories.

"By upgrading our research facilities, we will be in an even better position to develop innovative vegetable seed varieties with good yields, disease resistance and excellent quality," said Joachim Schneider, head of BioScience at Bayer CropScience.

"Technology is moving fast and has become a competitive component in vegetable breeding," said Johan Peleman, Nunhems’ managing director of research and development.

Nunhems, which also has research centres in Bangalore, India and California in the US, had annual sales of €240m in 2009, Bayer added.
