Asahi Kasei extends start-up date new of ACN, MMA plants

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan’s Asahi Kasei said on Wednesday it expects construction at its 200,000 tonnes/year acrylonitrile (ACN) and 70,000 tonnes/year methyl methacrylate (MMA) plants in Mab Ta Phut to be completed in the middle of 2011.

It was previously estimated that the plants would come on stream at the end of 2010, but a court injunction last year forced the company to amend their construction plans, Asahi Kasei said in a statement.

Thailand’s Central Administrative Court earlier this month released most of the projects in the Mab Ta Phut industrial estate from suspension, including the Asahi Kasei ACN and MMA joint venture (JV) projects.

The ACN and MMA plants are 48.5% owned by Asahi Kasei Chemicals, 48.5% owned by Thai oil and gas major PTT and 3.0% owned by Japanese trading house Marubeni.

“PTT Asahi Chemical received an official document from the relevant governmental authorities in Thailand declaring that our ACN and MMA project is not considered to be one which would cause harmful effects on the environment or human health, and is therefore exempted from the suspension order,” the Asahi Kasei statement said.
