LONDON (ICIS)--SABIC Innovative Plastics (SABIC IP), the Saudi petrochemical major’s engineering thermoplastics business, has increased production capacity of polyetherimide (PEI) resin by 35% with the opening of a new facility in Cartagena, Spain, it said on Thursday.

The €300m facility, which produces SABIC IP’s Ultem PEI resin, was built to meet growing worldwide demand, it added.

“We will manufacture our Ultem (polyetherimide) resins immediately and have the capability to make Extem (polyimide) resins and other high heat polymers in the future at this facility to support our global customers who require high temperature and high strength in their demanding applications,” said Charlie Crew, president and CEO of SABIC IP.

The plant would also encompass the scalable capacity for producing anhydrides from the manufacturing process, which are used for the modification of coatings, adhesives or as the base chemical for other polymers pharmaceuticals or pigments, SABIC IP said.
