HOUSTON (ICIS)--Europe's Reach legislation is increasing uncertainty among detergent producers, who do not know if their feedstock suppliers have successfully registered their chemicals, an official with the region's chemical industrial council said on Wednesday.

The first registration deadline for Reach is less than two months away, and there is still uncertainty among chemical producers and distributors, said Erwin Annys, director of Reach policy at Cefic, the European chemical industry council.

Annys spoke at the World Detergents Conference in Montreux, Switzerland.

“Right now there are 2.7m that pre-registered and 140,000 substances have been applied, making it impossible for downstream users to have a first check and see if the substances they are using are covered,” Annys said.

“If their suppliers didn’t do their registration then they are illegal from the market. This legislation not only look at the components and molecules of the substances but also their use throughout the supply chain,” he added.

Downstream users should already have close communication with their customers, according to Cefic.

The positive side of tackling the Reach legislation is that downstream users will be more prepared to comply with chemical regulations from other countries, Annys said.

The detergent conference ends on Thursday.
