HOUSTON (ICIS)--US non-farm employment fell by 95,000 jobs in September while the unemployment rate remained at 9.6%, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics said on Friday.

Government jobs fell by 159,000, reflecting both a drop in the number of number of temporary US census jobs for Census 2010 and job losses in local governments.

However, the private sector saw an increase of 64,000 jobs, the bureau reported.

Employment in manufacturing changed little in September and, on net, has been essentially flat since May, the bureau said.

The bureau also reported that there were 1.2m “discouraged workers” in September - those who were no longer looking for work because they believed nothing was available.
