HOUSTON (ICIS)--Dow Chemical is studying options for building a new toluene di-isocyanate (TDI) plant in an emerging market, a company source said on Monday.

A new TDI unit would not be built in the US, the source said at the 2010 Polyurethanes Technical Conference in Houston.

Meanwhile, Latin America remained a possibility, according to the source.

Dow is considering the construction of a new facility following the April 2010 shutdown of the company’s TDI plant in Freeport, Texas. The Freeport TDI plant had become uneconomical to run, the company said.

The plan for a new TDI production facility are in line with Dow’s objective to remain fully committed as a supplier of polyurethanes products, the company source said.

The conference, which is organised by the American Chemistry Council's (ACC) Center for the Polyurethanes Industry (CPI), lasts through Wednesday.
